Dead Connection
April 29, 2009 by Safe Online Shopping · Leave a Comment

Putting feisty DA Samantha Kincaid on hold after three novels (Close Case, etc.), Burke introduces a disappointingly dull heroine in 30-year-old NYPD detective Ellie Hatcher. Flamboyant homicide detective Flann McIlroy asks outspoken Ellie to assist in looking into the First Date case, a series of murders seemingly connected by the female victims’ subscription to an online-dating site. Flann is relying on curvy Ellie as date bait, but also hopes that Ellie’s past might help with the case: Ellie’s father, a Wichita, Kans., cop, died under mysterious circumstances soon after bringing an infamous local serial killer, the College Hill Strangler, to justice. As Ellie and Flann dig deeper into the shady history of the dating site—and its potential link to the Russian mafia—Ellie realizes that the killer is taunting her just as the College Hill Strangler taunted her father. Ellie’s character never quite gels, however, and her interactions with the suspects don’t provide enough tension or heat to keep pages turning all the way through. (July)

4 Stars Good mystery with great new character
Congratulations to Alafair Burke on creating Ellie Hatcher. She is a great character, and I’m eager to read more books based on her.
The mystery novel is compelling and interesting, and the characterization is strong. The biggest flaw is that the author tried to add one too many ingredients into the plot. I could have done without the Russian Mafia stuff. It seemed far-fetched and felt like an editor told the writer she needed more complexity. She didn’t.
3 Stars Easy Weekend Read
Dead Connection is an entertaining, easy read. Detective Ellie Hachter
is temporarily teamed with seasoned, maverick Dectective Flann McIlray. Flann suspects that a serial killer is using the internet dating service First Date to select his victims. Burke provides information on both officers histories ( which plays a part in the story).
The story moves along at a good pace. The dectectives take some wrong turns along the wave but, everything comes together at the end. By the way, Dave Robicheaux makes a cameo appearance in the story. Three of the victims are drawn well. I felt sympathy for them. The officers are okay.
3 Stars `Find the motive, and the motive will lead you to the man.’
Detective Ellie Hatcher is specifically sought for a special assignment on the homicide task force when a clue left at the scene of a murder seems to connect two cases to an online dating service. Detective Hatcher is a rookie NYPD detective but Detective Flann McIlroy, seeks her involvement anyway. Why? I don’t want to spoil the novel for anyone: suffice to say there is an explanation in the novel.
This thriller is set in the murky world of identity theft and anonymity: both made easy by the use of the internet. While Hatcher and McIlroy set out to solve the crimes, they uncover other crimes that may be related and a number of potential suspects. Along the way, both Hatcher and McIlroy break a number of rules and individual readers may find this irritating if not unbelievable.
And the conclusion? Some aspects are more clear-cut than others, and I found some parts of the storyline more satisfying than others. Overall, though, this was an enjoyable read and well worth picking up if you have a couple of hours to fill.

2 Stars The main plot seems to get out of control, and the author leaves too many unanswered questions
Over the last few years, Alafair Burke has delivered a fine series of mystery novels featuring District Attorney Samantha Kincaid. These books catapulted Burke (the daughter of bestselling author James Lee Burke) into the big time. Her newest procedural features NYPD detective Ellie Hatcher, an attractive, bright and street-smart rookie.
Hatcher lives with a haunted past. Her father, who was a cop in Wichita, Kansas, where she grew up, died mysteriously in pursuit of a serial killer dubbed the College Hill Strangler. After an internal investigation by his department, his death was ruled a suicide. But even as a kid Ellie never believed her father would take his own life. She felt a cover-up was easy to pull off because her mother would not question any findings or complain about losing the compensation to which she was entitled. Burke says of her new leading lady: “Her father always told her, Find the motive, and the motive will lead you to the man.” These words are the foundation of Hatcher’s tenaciousness and unflagging commitment to bring justice to victims.
In DEAD CONNECTION, Burke’s story unfolds around the latest cyber-phenomenon: online dating services. In this Sargasso Sea of strangers who put themselves “out there,” victims could be exposing themselves for trouble rather than love. Yet, ironically, Burke herself met her husband through “an online dating service [and goes on to say]…there I found the plot of [this novel] and…Ellie Hatcher.”
Hatcher is surprised and flattered when bombastic detective Flann McIlroy asks her to be assigned temporarily to his department. So far the investigation has revealed that the only common thread in the lives of the dead women is the dating service to which they all subscribed. And he proposes to use the rookie as bait to catch a killer. She is not quite sure how she feels about this since she thought she was chosen for her brains. But her desire to work with the “legendary” McIlroy overrides any misgivings on her part. She doesn’t dare question the plum assignment.
As they embark on their quest, one very explosive fact emerges: both Hatcher and McIlroy are hardheaded, stubborn people who want to do things their own way. But as the very junior side of this unlikely team is constantly reminded, she must take her lead from her older colleague. Ultimately, their relationship works and brings both pathos and humor to a chilling story.
As the two delve deeper and deeper into the dating service, they come to find the owner a scoundrel who may have dealings with the Russian mafia. If he does, how does that impact their serial killer investigation? Have they stumbled into a new crime and a new investigation? In spite of this possible complication, Ellie and Flann diligently continue searching for a mass murderer. And can he be part of some Russian tactic by using the Internet? As Ellie continues to think all of this through, she remembers how the College Hill Strangler played head games with her father. She slowly comes to the conclusion that her job is to find a mass murderer who’s playing games with her. Can this insight help her in her quest to find this madman?
Alafair Burke’s previous novels were tightly written and well plotted, and the characters all worked in sync. Unfortunately, in DEAD CONNECTION she doesn’t pull the various subplots together into a cohesive whole. Here, the main plot seems to get out of control, and she leaves too many unanswered questions. And Hatcher, while charming and savvy to a certain degree, is too young and na

5 Stars Missing Manual on eBay
Great book in explaining all the aspects of safe buying and selling items on eBay!!! It has helped us enormously.
5 Stars Fantastic Book
Best book I have read about eBay. Very comprehensive, detailed and well written. Hard work went into producing this book.
It is both for beginners and beyond.
4 Stars A good introduction, but probably due for an update
This is a great starter book for anyone curious about buying or selling on eBay. My only issue is that the book could probably use a refreshing. eBay is a very dynamic property and this book was probably written at least a year ago.
5 Stars SELL AMERICAN!!
Are you one of the millions of people who buy and sell on eBay? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Nancy Conner, has written an outstanding book that will help you get to the site, get registered, and get going.
Conner, begins by showing you everything you need to get going on eBay. Then, she shows you how to bid on eBay auctions with confidence. The author continues by showing you how to search better than the competition and bid smarter. In addition, she then shares other secrets serious shoppers use to prevail on eBay. The author also introduces eBay tips and tricks. Then, the author shows you how to hone in on your strategy for a competitive edge. Next, she shows you how to turn your eBay hobby into a part- or full-time business. Next, the author shows you how to get in on the action and create a sales niche within eBay’s specialty auctions. Then, she briefly describes the software that you can use on eBay. The author continues by presenting general and specialized discussion groups, both on and off eBay, that will help you make satisfying connections. Finally, she covers a Learning Center just for newbies, a Help page, interactive help via live chat or e-mail, a centralized Services page, a site map, discussion boards, and more.
After reading this excellent book, you’ll be using eBay like an old pro. In other words, this book was will help you ramp up your eBay experience–find more bargains, build better auctions, and close more sales.
5 Stars Whatever “it” is, you’ll find it in the Missing Manual…
If there was one book I would suggest to anyone venturing into the waters of eBay, it’d end up being this one… eBay: The Missing Manual by Nancy Conner. This one covers it all.
Contents:
Part 1 - Buying on eBay: Ready, Set, Shop!; Bidding, Paying, and Following Up; Finding - and Getting - Bargains; Power Buying Strategies
Part 2 - Selling on eBay: Sell Stuff, Make Money; Honing Your Competitive Edge; Going from Hobby to Business; Specialty Selling; Cool Tools for Sellers
Part 3 - Finding Other eBayers and Getting Help; Finding Help
Part 4 - Appendixes: Where to Learn More; HTML for eBayers; Other Auction Sites; Index
Like all other eBay books, this one covers how to buy and sell on eBay. The writing’s good, but there’d be nothing special if it stopped there. Where this book earns its keep is when it goes into areas I haven’t seen covered in any other book. I’ve never seen a book go into any detail on other resources to learn about eBay, such as call-in internet radio shows and newsletters. I’ve never seen a book cover HTML in a small number of pages in order to allow the seller to create better auction pages. There’s good coverage on third-party sites that give you more information on how to best price your auctions. There’s even material on how to evolve from buying and selling as a hobby to running a business based on eBay. Package all this up with clear writing and numerous screen shots, and you really *have* found the missing eBay manual.
To paraphrase eBay’s latest ad campaign… “Whatever you’re looking for, you’ll find *it* in eBay: The Missing Manual”…

5 Stars Excellent introduction to an emerging phenomenon…
The first book by Gina Lynn, SexRev 2.0 is an amazing look at the many possibilities of sexuality with the tools of the modern world. Her prose style is very easy to read. Her writing is to the point and direct, as is her attitude toward sex and relationships. This book is a very good introduction to the new technology of this century, and how it can be used to enhance your love life. After reading Gina’s column for some time, it is nice to hear her ‘voice’ in a longer narrative context. I love the fact that you can look at her writing and say to yourself “I know she is speaking from experience.”
5 Stars Time to upgrade to Sex Rev 2.0!
There is no doubt that sex and tech are forever linked in our world and Regina Lynn’s Sex Rev 2.0 is an entertaining, educational, and provocatively personal account of where these two fundamental forces in our lives currently stand. Regina does a marvelous job guiding the reader through the complexities, not only explaining the technology involved, but also the do’s and don’ts to bring this material into your real life in a positive, healthy, and exciting way! In these times of extreme sexual oppression in this country, Regina should be recognized as sexual freedom fighter. I can’t wait to see what version 3.0 has in store for us.
5 Stars A sane approach to sex online
Regina Lynn does what so few manage to do: explain the basics about online sexuality without throwing her readers into a panic. Lynn provides a landscape of some of the ways that the Internet can *enhance* one’s sexuality and sex life while most other books instill fear about this phenomenon in the average person. Sure, people become addicted to cybersex; people also become addicted to Twinkies. But most people are able to eat their Hostess products in moderation. And most people who choose to engage in online sexual activities — or at least explore their options — will do so to improve an in-person relationship, or use it to explore an aspect of their sexual identity they want to “try on” in a safer environment. Lynn writes with the notion that most people are simply curious about sex and the Internet as she paves the way for people to learn how the virtual world can improve their romances ans sex lives in the physical one. And she educates with compassion, humor, and savvy.
5 Stars A Truly Revolutionary Look at Sex in the Digital Age
Regina Lynn’s book starts with an interesting and believable thesis … that a new technology (the internet) has caused as much of a change in contemporary sexual patterns and practices as another new technology (the pill and other means of effective birth control) did a generation earlier.
As the Sex/Tech editor for Wired Magazine (in itself a respected distribution point for information about things new and technical), Ms. Lynn is in an almost unique position to keep up with the latest in this field. She brings much of this expertise to bear in this book.
With chapters dealing with everything from meeting people on line to women’s access to pornography, she covers many aspects of the intersection of these two domains … one ancient and one as modern as can be. Computers make possible powerful searches, which can bring people “together” who probably never could have met by chance in an earlier era. And women who would rather die than get caught sneaking down to Sam’s Smut Shack to buy a dirty book from some pimply-faced clerk who went to school with their son can (and, the evidence suggests, do) go on line and download reading and viewing materials that suit their intersts.
She goes on to deal with things like sex toys, breaking up in the internet age, and a whole host of other issues.
But in the end, the end is (as Ms. Lynn says, optimistically, at the end of her book) much the same as the beginning:
“The future of sex is just that: sex, only better.
“Dig it.”
5 Stars great read!! for the 4th wave
A smart savy guide to life love aqnd the internet. This is the real sex and web. It is both inteligent and entertaining and , well written . It’s an easy guide to usiing texh to best advantage in social setting.. When left on a table necver fails to ignite conversation.

4 Stars A Fun Read for Dating Boomers …
I enjoyed reading this very much … there is a lot of good information about the online dating experience with resources and ideas. It was a lot of fun to read ….Judsen has an irreverant sense of humor and a quick wit so that you don’t take it all so seriously but can get serious about trying it!
5 Stars Recommended for Boomer Women Who Want to Find the Right Man
This is a great book and I highly recommend it if you are in your mid-40s or beyond and looking to find the man of your dreams. Despite the title, the book is geared to women. It’s a great primer to online dating, helping you find your way through dating internet sites, preparing a profile and the steps between getting a “wink” and getting married.
What I also like about this book is that Judsen takes time to help you reflect on past loves and determine what went right and what went wrong. She also takes you through all the steps of setting up your profile and responding to emails on dating sites, as well as “dos and don’ts” that will help you get noticed by the men you really want to attract.
If you are dating, get this book.
2 Stars This Book Is NOT!!! for guys!!!!
This is a well written book but very improperly titled. It should be titled, “The WOMAN’s guide to online dating.”
Guys if you’re looking for a book that answers guy specific questions, look elsewhere. There are no answers here!!!
5 Stars Date for Dad
I sent a copy of the book to my dad, not really expecting him to read it. My dad is a terrific guy and recently divorced after 32 years of marriage. I talked with him last night and he mentioned that he was ready to get online and start dating!!!! For my dad to say that is HUGE!!! I’m actually flying out next week to help him set up the computer I am giving to him. I don’t
know if he has ever been on the Internet. He said the book made so much sense and made it sound so easy that he was ready to get out there.
Thank you, Judsen Culbreth, for writing a book that will help my dad find someone just as great as he is.
5 Stars Trust Culbreth; it works
Culbreth’s book is more than a how to for internet dating. It forces us to reflect on who we really are and what we really want from a potential mate. For those who have been too timid to try online dating, Culbreth offers warm persuasive and encouraging advice. For those who have tried online dating, Culbreth gives you a road map on the best way to sell yourself. If you are over the age of 35, and want to be with someone, read this book. Trust Culbreth; it works.

Guerrilla Marketing On Line The Entrepreneurs Guide to Earning Profits on the Internet

Levinson and Rubin (Guerrilla Marketing, LJ 2/15/89) do what many authors who purport to deal with marketing online fail to do: show managers of small and medium-sized businesses how to profit from the electronic marketplace. Describing online services and the best methods for maneuvering in various formats, such as forums, newsgroups, and bulletin boards, they present the advantages and disadvantages of online marketing and the most effective marketing techniques. Maintaining their practical focus, the authors conclude by discussing the tactics and strategies that will most likely yield success. While glitzier, this work complements Jill H. and Matthew V. Ellsworth’s superb Marketing on the Internet (Wiley, 1995). Highly recommended for business collections, managers, and informed readers.?J. P. Miller, GSLIS, Simmons Coll., Boston

1 Star Outdated information - not worth the money
The information in this book is completely outdated. Most of the links listed don’t work and the methods are archaic in today’s internet world. As the internet evolves at light speed a book written in 1995 and updated in 1997 has very little relevant information in 2003. Very disappointing, as I found the Guerrilla Marketing Handbook by the same author to be well written and a useful resource, although it too needs updating to provide online contact information for many of the resources listed.
1 Star Run away
Sorry, but this book is sooooooo not real. There are a few pieces of advice worth considering, but 90% of this books ideas won’t fly in today’s day and age.
If you are a budding author wanting to market your book, don’t buy this, it won’t work - trust me, I tried.
On the other hand, if you’re an Internet marketer, then most of this book is worth the money and the wait of shipping….
3 Stars ick ick
Most of my friends who read this book was incensed. They found the techniques used in the book to be annoying. And I don’t think this book will be of much use to me if using will alienate my potential customers. A much better read is Guerrilla PR Wired written by PR guy Michael Levine. It’s intelligent and relevant, and is guaranteed not to put off customers.
4 Stars A GOOD BEGINNER COURSE IN INTERNET MARKETING
I’ve been marketing on the internet for over 3 years now, and this was the first book on the subject that I had to work with. It is easy to understand, and it got me started.
But once you get started–learn, improvise and bust loose!
Sure, there are constantly new ideas and methods out there to learn that aren’t covered in this book. But because of the nature of the internet, no manual will ever be complete.
Get this book and get going!

I read this book before I have to join with emarketing team
at my office. It makes me understand the online location &
How to take the most advantage from the internet marketing
environment. In my opinion, the last chapter is too short
to implement. Anyway,I always read it again & again, when

George MacPherson Reid (Hamden)
4 Stars starts from scratch
Miller gives a nice, very lightly technical guide to effective online shopping. To someone like you, maybe, who has never bought online, it can seem like a forbidding new world. So what Miller does is step through the fundamentals. Starting with a chapter giving a general guide to what you can expect at many online websites. One key thing you should realise is that the payment by credit card is really no different from traditional real world usage. Nor, despite everything you might read about online fraud, is it any riskier. But he does also go into describing those frauds.
He also gives brief but effective coverage of major online sites. Like Amazon and eBay. On the subject of using eBay, you can find entire books devoted to this. Miller’s is more succinct, and is more than adequate to get you started on eBay, if you so desire.
The second half of the book is an appendix of useful websites, grouped by their main interests. A little mundane to experienced surfers. But perhaps not to you.
